Old #quiz habits die hard. Origin of the word #Adultery ? Has nothing to do with adults! Adult from Latin adolescere meaning to grow up, mature - adolescent to adultus.

Adultery comes from the Latin adulterare, meaning to corrupt. Same origin as adulterate
One line conclusion of SC take on #497 #Adultery law : Whenever society will demand that women also be punished for a crime that man is, they will strike the law itself down rather than making the offence gender neutral.

MEN : You have absolutely no RIGHTS within a Marriage.
Let me get this straight: #Adultery is not a crime but #TripleTalaq is? So a Muslim man can be adulterous but if he initiates divorce...he can be thrown in jail based on a complaint filed by his wife or her family? Doesn’t make any sense!

1. Yusuf Aziz v. State of Bombay 1951 - it was contented that the law discriminated against men by not making women equally culpable. It was held valid
2. S Vishnu v. UOI 1985 - men were not allowed to prosecute their wives for the offence of adultery... pic.twitter.com/z7ftu6WHBz
Decriminalising of #Adultery is welcome and long overdue. Adultery is now grounds for divorce not crime. The law criminalising men for relations with some other man's wife was patriarchal, assumes wife is husband's property and has no autonomy. Good riddance #AdulteryVerdict

That being said, it seems lacking that #SupremeCourt identifies Sec 497 IPC as offensive to women(wives), but comments nothing about the men who are the sole party incriminated in #AdulteryLaw. Sad that the SC recognizes only the sexism against women instead of both in #Adultery.

Can someone please explain how Supreme Court is taking all the stands on several other laws to the extent of striking it down but explained their inability to do so with #498A that has surely impacted many more lives? Isn't the judgment on #497 #Adultery also beyond their powers?

CJI Dipak Misra (for himself and Justice Khanwilkar):
* Any section that treats women and indignity will invite wrath of constitution
* "Women can't be asked to stay as man or society asks"
* "It's time to say husband is not master of a woman"
